ALL THE DURABILITY OF A DURAWALL SLEEPER AND EVEN MORE EARTH FRIENDLY
DURAWALL ECOSLEEPER ™
HOW MUCH CO² DOES A DURAWALL ECO-SLEEPER™ RETAINING WALL PROJECT SAVE?
When you install an earth friendly Durawall retaining wall using Eco-Sleeper, the average residential Durawall Eco-Sleeper retaining wall project can reduce your carbon footprint by a massive 1.639 tonnes of CO² !
That’s the equivalent of planting 78 mature trees in your garden to save the same amount of carbon dioxide.

FROM TIMBER TO CONCRETE SLEEPERS
We have been manufacturing concrete sleepers for over 15 years. When we first started, timber sleepers were our competition. Our goal was to convert clients from using hardwood and pine sleepers to using concrete sleepers thus reducing the clearing and destruction of beautiful forests, habitat and land degradation. Timber sleepers average 15-20 years before needing to be removed and replaced where they end up in landfill contributing more waste and cost to the community.
Concrete Sleeper and Gal Steel Post combination retaining walls have been engineered to Australian Standards to last 60 plus years ensuring a long term solution embraced by councils that now specify concrete sleeper retaining walls in new subdivisions. Demand for concrete sleepers is on the rise and are the accepted norm, greatly reducing the demand for timber sleepers reducing the pressure on our precious forests. The concrete sleeper is now the common choice, a good result!
Whilst this is all very good, the production of cement and the curing of concrete emits a tremendous amount of CO². The use of concrete in the world is believed to contribute 8% of global CO² emissions.
WHAT EXACTLY IS EARTH FRIENDLY CONCRETE?
Globally, the production of 1 tonne of Portland cement emits as much as 1 tonne of CO². By switching to Earth Friendly Concrete or EFC, CO² output is reduced by up to 80%.
- EFC uses a geo polymer binder instead of cement which is made from the chemical reaction of to recycled industrial wastes, flyash and slag.
- EFC is a high performance concrete that has additional benefits of higher resistance to common forms of degradation that affects concrete.
- EFC has a high acid and sulphate resistance, a high Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) resistance, a high chloride ingress resistance (marine).
- EFC has low heat of reaction which increases the durability of design life.
All concrete sleepers are reinforced with 2 or 3 deformed steel bars to give the concrete its strength.
The rear we add to our Durawall Eco-Sleeper is a Fibre Reinforced Polymer FRP rebar that reduces CO² output in its production by 43% but giving us twice the tensile strength of traditional steel rebar. The FRP rebar we use compared to steel reo bar is non-corrosive, non-magnetic and non-conductive which increases the durability and design life of our Eco-Sleeper.

OUR COMMITMENT TO A CLEANER GREENER FUTURE
With zero emission goals for many countries, it is up to governments to legislate and specify reduced carbon emitting products, industry to produce these products and for the community to support and purchase these products. We believe the time to develop lo CO² producing products is now. Durawall has undertaken extensive research and development to come up with Durawall Eco-Sleeper.
We are aware and acknowledge that we still produce CO² in other parts of our production chain and have more improvements to implement, however a large journey starts with the first step and by switching to EFC and non steel rebar, we start that journey!
Durawall is committed to doing better evolving and playing our part in a cleaner greener future.
